All too often the media surrounding the trucking industry is negative in tone. We have watched in recent weeks a couple of hi profile accidents on the highway and we all are watching what happens with the truckers strike in Long Beach. This week the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) shared some positive news on their website. The TCA has awarded $89,150.00 in college scholarships.
The Truckload Carriers Association
The Truckload Carriers Association dates back to 1938 to it’s beginnings as the Contract Carriers Conference. Since that time it has evolved into a nationwide organization representing hundreds of truckload carriers. From their website:
The Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) is the only national trade association whose sole focus is the truckload segment of the motor carrier industry. The association represents dry van, refrigerated, flatbed, intermodal container, and end-dump carriers operating in the 48 contiguous states, as well as Alaska, Mexico, and Canada.
The TCA has been instrumental in preserving and protecting the image of the trucking profession. One way they do that is through their scholarship program.
College Scholarships
Since 1973 the Truckload Carriers Association College Scholarship fund has been awarding scholarships to assist students attending colleges and universities across America. The scholarships are available to any child, grandchild or spouse of an employee of a TCA member carrier. The same qualifications apply to those related to any contracted affiliated with a TCA member. Students must be full time college students. In addition to these requirements applicants must demonstrate strong academic accomplishments and have a financial need.
Winners
This year 32 students were selected for awards. Scholarships range in size from $2725.00 to $6250.00 In today’s economy every dollar counts.
