Don’t Let Others Scare You
One thing I’d like to touch on is that many Owner Operators, Lease Purchasers and truck drivers in general complain or speak negatively about the job or industry, BUT they still drive their trucks every day, they still make a living, they continue on and they work hard to prosper. This is not an easy job, but it can be a very rewarding and successful line of work if you are willing to put in the work required. With that said, let’s get down to business.
Do Your Research
Now, I mentioned above to not let others scare you, but you still need to do some research. Please DO ask other Owner Operators and Lease Purchasers how much money they take home. DO ask how many miles they run on average and how long they have been with their current company. If they work 100 percent independently, ask them who they use as a broker to stay busy or if they have long standing relationships with businesses that steadily ship freight.
Here are a few tips if you want to prosper as an Owner Operator or Lease Purchaser:
- Build long-term relationships. Jumping from carrier to carrier will only result in you starting over again and again. You either didn’t do your research about the company before signing on or you need to take a look in the mirror and adjust your attitude or expectations and find a way to work with your support staff. Your best friend is going to be your dispatcher, so spend some time being friendly. You won’t always get the runs or loads you want, but over time you can benefit greatly from a respectful work relationship.
- Understand the economy and the types of businesses you work with. Make sure your carrier is servicing growing industries and have long-term relationships with their customers. If there is high turnover on the customer side or with drivers, that should be a sure sign there is something wrong.
